Tension · Polarisation · Social cohesion

You sense that relationships are changing. What is really happening?
And what does this situation require?

Conversations become harder. Positions begin to solidify. A decision, change or incident sets something in motion. You know action may be needed, but moving too quickly can make the situation more difficult.

HET MEERVOUDIG PERSPECTIEF / 01

Who I work with

When differences put collaboration or community life under pressure.

For people carrying responsibility who recognise that a complex situation cannot be resolved with a standard response.

  • Local authorities, public leaders and policymakers facing social tension
  • Executives, managers and HR teams dealing with tension inside organisations
  • Professionals working in neighbourhoods, education, welfare, youth work and public safety
  • Organisations that want to recognise earlier what is changing beneath the surface

The sector is not the deciding factor. The central questions are: what is really happening, and what does this situation require now?

Recognisable situations

Something is happening. But it is still difficult to interpret.

Conversations begin to change.

People listen less, take positions more quickly or avoid a subject that is becoming increasingly sensitive.

A decision puts relationships under pressure.

Responses emerge in a team, organisation, neighbourhood or community that no longer fit the original plan.

Existing interventions are not enough.

Conversations, training or measures have already taken place, but the same tension keeps returning.

What is really happening?

What might we not yet see?

What still holds people together?

What does this situation require?

From uncertainty to options for action

Understand first. Then act with purpose.

Not every tension calls for immediate intervention. Sometimes a broader view is needed first: which perspectives are involved, where are relationships changing and what connection is still present?

When a single conversation, training course or standard approach is not enough, strategic advice can help clarify the issue and determine an appropriate course.

From practice · Local government

A new care facility.
A neighbourhood to understand.

A municipality was preparing for the arrival of a care facility for people with addiction. The challenge: develop an approach that takes account of the neighbourhood and the different contexts involved.

An anonymised case from my advisory practice.

The approach

I supported the municipality in mapping the Cohesion Field. We used my Cohesiekaart and ContextKompas to explore what sustains connection and to examine the issue from different perspectives.

The outcome

The work produced a strategy and a clearer understanding of the different contexts involved. This gave the municipality a firmer basis for deciding how to approach the arrival of the facility in the neighbourhood.

Let us first look at what is happening ↗

Difference does not have to disappear for people to move forward together.

Het Cohesieveld is my approach to understanding and strengthening social cohesion. It reveals what drives people apart and which people, relationships and patterns hold an organisation or community together.

Polarisation and Het Cohesieveld complement each other. One lens shows where relationships are hardening; the other reveals what still holds people together. Together they offer a fuller picture of what a situation requires.
