3V-Model
From understanding to connecting in times of tension
In a society where tensions and polarization quickly become visible, the reflex is often to act immediately. But effective action does not begin with intervention.
It starts with understanding
The 3V Model helps professionals, organizations and municipalities look beyond the surface and work from insight, interpretation, and connection. Not as a linear step-by-step plan but as a continuous movement with the Cohesion Field at its center, the space where connection remains possible.
No fixed order — you can enter anywhere
Practice is never neatly structured in steps. Sometimes you step in when conflict is already present. Sometimes you are still in a phase where tensions and/or polarization are barely visible. That’s why the 3V Model is not linear. You can enter at any moment:
- in the middle of a conflict (Connect)
- at the first signs (Explore)
- or when you already sense something beneath the surface (Deepen)
From there, you move between the three. That’s what makes the model flexible and applicable in everyday reality.
Explore
What is really going on? You look at what is visible and at what lies beneath the surface. Without judgment and without rush.
Deepen
What lies underneath? You explore the meaning behind what you see. Why does this affect people and what is truly at play?
Connect
What moves us forward? You create space for movement, not by removing differences, but by strengthening relationships and allowing perspectives to coexist.
The Cohesion Field as the core
At the center lies the Cohesion Field, the place where, despite differences, people remain connected. Where there is space for relationship, even when it’s uncomfortable. Because that’s where the key lies.
Example from practice
A municipality notices that residents are strongly opposing the arrival of a center for asylum seekers. The first reflex is often to organize an information meeting (Connect). But during that meeting, the conversation spirals. Anger, distrust, accusations.
What’s happening here?
When you apply the 3V Model, you see:
- Entry at Connect: the conversation has already started
- Back to Explore: who is present? who is missing? what is being said and what isn’t?
- Then to Deepen: where does the anger come from? Fear? Previous experiences with government? A feeling of not being heard?
Why this works
Many interventions start too late—at the level of visible conflict. The 3V Model helps you:
- see earlier what is really going on
- better understand what lies beneath
- act more effectively
- and, most importantly, continuously shift your approach depending on what the situation requires
Who is this model for?
For professionals working in complexity:
- municipalities and policy advisors
- the social domain
- education and healthcare
- civil society organizations
